I presented this miniature portrait of Mrs. Garfield, widow of President Garfield, to the White House in Washington, D.C. It is the only known portrait of her. Previously, they had not had one of her, although they try to collect portraits of all the First Ladies. The portrait was by my friend Brenda Francklyn, who knew Mrs. Garfield when she was young and painted this. Olivia and I know Brenda Francklyn when we were young. I have written an account of Brenda Francklyn in my book The Crystal Sun, a lengthy footnote but an interesting one.
